LA Diversity Program

The UCB Training Center believes a diverse student body is fundamental to developing rich comedic scenes in improvisation, sketch, and character work.

Through outreach, scholarships, and community events, the UCB Training Center aims to develop a student body that reflects the society in which it exists.

As the curriculum promotes being truthful and drawing from real life when possible, classes are more rewarding when students bring a variety of experiences to the work they do in class and on the stage.

We are looking to increase our diversity of
  • race and ethnicity
  • sexual orientation
  • gender identification
  • people over 40
  • individuals with disabilities
  • U.S. military service members or veterans
In addition to efforts at the UCB Training Center, we support a broad range of community organizations that foster inclusion, encourage diversity and are committed to advancing comedic opportunities for under-served communities.

Each year UCB offers 300 new and returning students scholarship credits to study for free at the Training Center.

The application window is open in March and September. The next application window is open from September 1- 15 2017. 

Based on the strongest and/or most interesting essays we receive, we set up one-on-one interviews with select applicants. We are looking to increase the diversity of our community in many areas (e.g. racial identity, ethnic identity, sexual orientation and gender identity, differently-abled persons, former service members, and individuals above the age of 40.) When filling out your essay, try to answer humorously, honestly and share with us why your experience is so unique.

If you're interested in applying, keep these dates in mind:
-September 1-15 is the application window, no exceptions.
-If you are selected for an interview, you will be notified around September 21.
-Interviews will be scheduled on September 24. 25. 26, 27 from 10AM - 7PM (If you are out of town during these dates, you should not apply)
-Interviewees will be notified by October 2.

Note: You do not need to apply for or receive a scholarship to participate in other elements of the Diversity Program.


Once a month the LA Diversity Committee hosts a panel in Inner Sanctum. The panels could be Q&A’s with professionals in the comedy industry with diverse backgrounds (Keegan-Michael Key and Brian Gallivan are past guests), conversations with diverse performers on our house teams, discussions on issues facing our diverse students or just a fun hang out and a chance to commune with other members of this community.

Typically the Diversity “New Brain” Panel is the first Saturday of the month 12pm – 2pm. Panel topics, guests and any changes in schedule can be found on the Inner Sanctum schedule



We host a weekly free improv jam in the Inner Sanctum for performers of all experience levels. The jam, "Everybody Get in Here!" is every Friday at 6:00. Any updates/changes to the schedule can be found here:

Since its inception in 2009, the Upright Citizens Brigade Training Center has awarded over $700,000 in scholarships via our program.
